Animal Info

Napoleon Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus)

The napoleon wrasses are expensive consumed fish that live in the coral reef. This condition forces fishermen to catch more napoleon wrasse. Often, they use explosive that will not only kill the fish but also destroy the reef.

Giant Freshwater Whipray (Himantura chaopraya)

The giant freshwater whipray is a very large estuarine and freshwater species that can reach of maximum diameter of 230 cm. The giant freshwater whipray in our main aquarium came from Pelabuhan Ratu, west Java.

Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus)

One species of sharks commonly found in the tropical reef region is the blacktip reef shark. This is a non-aggressive shark. However, some cases about the attack to fishermen and waders have been reported. The spear fishermen often hang up their catch along their belly. Blood from the fish will attrack the blacktip reef shark. This is the very common situation where the blacktip misbite the fishermen.

Sea Turtle

Sea turtles are large turtles that inhabit warm waters of the sea. They are similar to their terrestrial (land) cousins, the tortoises, and to freshwater turtles, except that their legs have been modified into flippers to aid them in swimming. They also cannot pull their heads and legs into their shells if threatened. There are six species of sea turtles that inhabit Indonesian waters: hawksbill, loggerhead, olive ridley, green, flatback, and leatherback.

Octopus (Octopus sp.)

The octopuses are known as the chameleon of the ocean for they can quickly change colors adapting the suurounding environment. They have human-like eyes that can accurately differentiate shapes, texture, and colors.

Dugong (Dugong dugon)

Dugong belongs to Sirenians together with manatee and and Steller’s Sea Cow. Dugongs move by using their flippers and crescent-moon-shaped tail. Besides for swimming, the flippers are also used for crawling on the sea floor, holding the sea grass, and embracing their calves.

Carp fish (Tor sp.)

This large-scale carp belongs to family cyprinoidea and by people from Kuningan regency, West Java, it is called the God’s fish. The local people consider the fish as sacred and will not capture them for any reason. That is why the populations remain stable over periods of time.

Electric eel (Electrophorus electricus)

Electric eels are famous for its ability to produce strong electrical currents, reaching 500-650 volts. This strong discharge is used to stun or kill prey. This electrical discharge is also used to ward off potential predators. They are found in the Amazon River Basin in South America and eat other fish. Electric eels stun their prey with electric shocks since they do not have teeth to catch them.

Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas)

The largest scaled freshwater fish in the world, Pirarucu reach lengths of up to 3 metres and weigh up to 200 kg. They are members of the Family Osteoglossidae, along with another more commonly known South American fish, the much smaller Arowana. Found in the Amazon River, Pirarucus are top freshwater predators that hunt other fish.
